It was the headbutt heard around the world. Well, at least the college basketball world.
UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley was fortunate to avoid a technical foul late in his team’s 73-72 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in the Elite Eight of the 2026 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Hurley appeared to headbutt referee Roger Ayers with 0.3 seconds remaining on the clock, which is, of course, a major no-no under rules that explicitly bar coaches from making any contact with officials.
Ayers has since claimed that he didn’t notice the incident. Although fans were skeptical of that claim, claiming instead that Ayers wanted to avoid punishment for failing to make a potentially game-changing call.
Hurley, however, absolutely knew what he was doing, and he recently explained why he did as well.
Dan Hurley Says He Thought Referee Roger Ayers Was Celebrating With Him!
Hurley appeared on a recent episode of The Triple Option podcast, and during an interview with host Mark Ingram, he explained that he didn’t mean to intimidate Ayers. Instead, he believed that the referee was trying to celebrate UConn’s victory!
“At that point in the game, we had it won. And, he’s such an easy guy to work with during the game that I thought he was coming over to chest bump me to celebrate the shot because it’s not like that for me with him,” Hurley said. “That, in no way, was like me and a ref that I had been at their throat the whole game. Other points of the game, I had my arm around him, walking out of the timeout. We were cracking jokes and laughing.“
Now, if I’m a Duke fan, that answer only raises additional questions. Why would you think a referee, who is supposed to be completely objective, would celebrate with you? Was Ayers as chummy with Blue Devils’ coach Jon Scheyer throughout the game? Does Hurley’s answer make it even more suspicious that Ayers says he doesn’t even remember the moment?
Listen, not everything is a conspiracy. In fact, these days, people jump to conspiracy theories far too easily rather than just accepting the simplest possible explanation.
But this situation is certainly pretty bizarre. And no coach in the country seems to get away with the level of antics that Hurley does without any significant backlash.
