Improved Camera Angle Shows Uruguay Was Almost A Foot Offside For Its Goal Against USMNT

The United States Men’s National Team crashed out of the Copa America on Monday night following a 1-0 loss to Uruguay.

While the majority of the damage to the USMNT’s Copa campaign was done in the previous match against Panama — in which the US lost after going down to 10 men and taking a 1-0 lead — the game against Uruguay was disheartening all the same, especially due to how it played out.

Fueled by an inexperienced ref who was clearly in over his head, USA vs. Uruguay was marked by a bevy of controversial officiating decisions, most notably Uruguay’s goal that gave them a match-deciding 1-0 lead.

When a replay of the goal was shown, however, most viewers believed it would be ruled out of offsides, as the Uruguayan goalscorer appeared to be clearly beyond the USMNT’s last defender. Despite a VAR review, though, the goal stood and Uruguay took a decisive 1-0 lead.

The camera angles used during the match were already being heavily criticized prior to the VAR review, as the CONMEBOL feed of the game was being broadcast from what was being described as an “All 22” angle — the match was being filmed from a very high angle.

Those camera angles have only come under more scrutiny following the match as it appears they influenced the offside decision, as further inspection has shown that Uruguay was about a foot offside when they scored their goal.

Even Los Angeles rapper Schoolboy Q couldn’t believe what he was watching.

The glass-half-full perspective of the USMNT’s loss, however, is that crashing out of the group stage with arguably the most talented roster in the history of the program puts the job security of head coach Gregg Berhalter in a seriously precarious position.

With the 2026 World Cup — set to be played on home soil — looming, most US soccer finds are eager for Berhalter to be canned and replaced with a more competent manager.
