Jess McClain looked set to win the 2026 U.S. Half Marathon Championships. Then chaos struck, robbing the 34-year-old from Stanford graduate of her first national championship.

McClain, who represented the United States last year at the World Championships in the full marathon, taking eighth, was well ahead of the field with just 1.5 miles as she looked set to cruise to victory in Atlanta.

However, the lead bike then took McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Edna Kurgat, each of whom had surged ahead to take the podium spots, off the course.

Molly Born, who was over a minute behind at the time of the mistake, then crossed the line first and was credited with the win in 69:43. Born declined an interview after the race.

However, according to Citrus Mag, a number of protests are expected to be filed, and it’s easy to see why.

Jess McClain Is Furious Over U.S. Half Marathon Championships Robbery

“I’m so pissed off,” McClain said as she crossed the finish line in ninth position, for the time being.

Not only would it have been her first national championship, but she would have also qualified for the 2026 World Championships in Copenhagen, alongside Hurley and Kurgat.

Additionally, she misses out on the $20,000 first-place payout given to the male and female individual victors. Although it’s possible that USA Track and Field could step in and pay out the top three finishers.

Officially speaking, runners are responsible for knowing the course. So if the rules are followed as written, nothing will change.

However, if you’re going to have a lead vehicle in a race, that vehicle needs to be responsible for leading athletes down the correct route.

We’ve seen similar incidents in cycling in recent years. But this is, by far, the biggest of such controversies in the U.S. running world, and McClain has a genuine gripe on her hands.
