USA Absolutely Screwed By All-Time Terrible Call Leading To A Goal

Soccer in the Western Hemisphere is notoriously corrupt , with dozens of indictments handed down in the past decade due to improper conduct in CONCACAF, the governing body of soccer in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, and in CONMEBOL, which governs South America.

While it would be improper to call it corruption, a truly unbelievable call gave Uruguay a crucial goal that helped eliminate the USA from Copa America on home soil, a massive setback for the United States Men’s National Team.

Midway through the second half, Uruguay had an attacking free kick that was saved by American goalkeeper Matt Turner right to Uruguay’s Mathias Olivera.

Alright, good goal, right? Look again. Olivera is very clearly offside.

Everyone saw it on television, too, as multiple looks showed he was clearly offside. And, as the players on both teams waited for the goal to be ruled out, the VAR official gave the decision that the goal counted.

And, here’s the line that was given on TV that justified the goal, which is clearly not a straight line and worth nothing.

The USA lost 1-0, and missed out on progressing out of the Copa America Group Stage, which is a pretty terrible result considering Panama and Bolivia were in the group. But, this call definitely factored in to things. At the time, the USA were going through with a draw, as Panama and Bolivia were tied 1-1 in the other match. While that ended up not being the case, it made the USA chase two goals down the stretch instead of one.

Frankly, the USMNT was not good enough in this tournament, and their amateurish, overmatched, and out-of-ideas manager Gregg Berhalter is likely going to be fired. But, if we can’t get the big calls called correctly, what are we doing here?
