The 2026 USA Track and Field Half Marathon Championship in Atlanta, Georgia ended in controversy, to say the least. Just minutes from the end of the race, the top three runners in the women’s race were led off course by an official pacer who took a wrong turn, costing the lead runners 400 meters off course and spots on the podium.

A podium spot in the USATF Half Marathon Championship gives each of the top three runners a spot at the 2026 World Championships in Copenhagen. So not only were they cost the glory of winning/spot on the podium in the US Championship they were robbed of potential glory on the world stage. Now, USATF will make things right.

USA Track and Field Announces Remedy After Half Marathon Championship Debacle

The top three runners that suffered after being led off course by the race official pacing runners were Jessica McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat. Jessica McClain was leading the race but ultimately finished in 9th place with a time of 1:11:27 after being led off course for 400 meters (1/4 mile).

26-year-old Molly Born won the race in a time of 1:09:43, less than two minutes ahead of Jessica McClain. Who is to say what would have happened if the runners were not led off course? But the fact remains, the three runners leading the race were following their pacer who led them off the race course.

Following the incident and an investigation, USATF CEO Max Siegel released a statement stating they would not be awarding world championship spots to the runners led off course. Siegel wrote they would have “serious concerns about the long-term precedent that could be set” by awarding spots to Jessica McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat.

There has since been a change of heart.

In a statement this morning, USA Track and Field announced there will be 7 spots awarded. 3 spots to the top 3 official finishers, 3 spots to Jessica McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat, and one “final spot will go to an athlete based on world rankings as of May 5.”

There, was that so hard?!

This was made possible after “World Athletics approved a one-time, exceptional expanded entry for the women’s half marathon at the 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark this September.”

USATF CEO Max Siegel said “from the moment this happened, our focus was on doing right by the athletes. Jessica, Emma Grace, and Ednah had clearly separated themselves in the race and we are sorry they did not get to celebrate their accomplishment by breaking the tape. On behalf of everyone at USA Track & Field, I want to thank World Athletics. Their council and leadership are committed to a fair and athlete-centered solution that preserves the integrity of competition while recognizing the reality of what occurred in Atlanta.”

If you didn’t see what initially happened, here is footage of the incident and a breakdown of what happened:

At this point, it seems like USATF was handcuffed by World Athletics who had the ultimate say in whether the three runners led off course would be invited to worlds. They could not change the results of the race without impacting the integrity of the results. So they had to apply for this one-time special exemption and hope for the best, which seems to have came to fruition.

USATF At The World Championships Will Be Unlike Years Past

While the USA Track and Field squad will have 7 runners in the Half Marathon at the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark instead of the typical 4, there will be a caveat: “only four athletes will be eligible to contribute to team scoring, all seven entrants will be eligible to earn World Athletics ranking points.”

What that means is there will be 7 athletes but only 4 of them will actually contribute to the USATF squad results.

In the statement, they added that “for the World Championships, Team USATF will designate 4 scoring athletes and 3 non-scoring athletes. The scorers will be determined with input from the athletes once the final team is known and all athletes have accepted their place on the team.”

While this is unfortunate for the three runners who will be left off the scoring and will not earn World Athletics ranking points, this does seem like the fairest possible outcome for all of the runners involved.
