Team USA Women’s Rugby Makes History With Incredible Walk-Off Win In Bronze Medal Match

Team USA’s Rugby Sevens made history on Tuesday just by competing in the medal round for the first time in Olympic history.

But then they went and outdid themselves.

After losing the semifinal to defending champ and tournament favorite New Zealand, the Americans upset Australia, 14-12, in the bronze medal match thanks to an incredible walk-off try from Alex “Spiff” Sedrick and subsequent conversion.

Sedrick’s try came with the USA trailing 12-7 and with no time remaining on the clock. But Rugby rules state that the game does not end until someone kicks the ball out of play, scores, or some on the attacking team commits an infraction.

Sedrick split the entire Australian defense and then went bursting down the field for a 80-plus-yard score.

She also made herself a hero in the process.

Prior to the games, not many people could say they were overly familiar with Team USA Rugby Sevens. But something tells us they’ll be one of the main attractions in four years in LA.
