Many people have recurring nightmares, like oversleeping a college final or the first day of work. For goalkeepers, I’m sure their recurring nightmare is something akin to what actually happened to USMNT and Cardiff City keeper Ethan Horvath on Saturday.

Cardiff City, formerly of the English Premier League and now playing in the second-division Championship, was looking to rebuild from an opening-week loss against Sunderland, 2-0. Instead, they suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Burnley that featured a terrible own goal by Ethan Horvath.

It was less than nine minutes into the match when center back Dimitrios Goudas sent a routine back pass to Horvath. As Horvath surveyed the field in anticipation of playing the next pass, he forgot the most important thing: the ball.

Oh no. That just can’t happen at any level, let alone at the level he’s playing at. And, that killed the vibes for the entire match for Cardiff as Burnley went on to absolutely shellack them.

Ethan Horvath has made ten appearances for the USMNT, and made the roster for the 2022 World Cup, where he backed up Matt Turner.
