San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama was feeling himself after the Spurs’ second win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the last 11 days, as he not only took a shot at OKC center Chet Holmgren but also got the fans hyped up with a postgame viking clap.
In the win over the Thunder, Wemby — who entered the game with a “questionable” tag on the injury report — played 23 minutes and had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. This season, his third in the NBA, Wemby is averaging 23.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 3.1 blocks per game
Despite his (relatively) modest stat line on the night, the 21-year-old Frenchman still took a pop at Holmgren, telling a French reporter that there’s “no comparison” between the two. Holmgren played 27 minutes and had 7 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist on the night.
Victor Wembanyama took a shot at Chet Holmgren and started a new viking clap tradition with the fans after the San Antonio Spurs’ win over the Oklahoma City Thunder
“I asked Victor Wembanyama (in French) whether he considers there to be any rivalry between him and Chet Holmgren, and he was pretty clear: ‘No, I don’t think about that. At least from a basketball standpoint, there’s no comparison (between us),'” reported L’Equipe reporter Maxime Aubin.
Following their dominant 130-110 win over the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, Wemby took to the court to engage the fans in a “viking clap,” which was originated in European soccer — its exact roots are debated — and was popularized by the Icelandic National Team’s fans during the 2016 EURO and 2018 World Cup. In the United States, it’s most commonly associated with Minnesota Vikings fans, who began using it following its popularization by Iceland in 2016.

“This is 100% some euro s—, he trying to bring the culture over lol,” one viral tweet summarized.
“Football culture in my beautiful sport Wemby they finna build a monument in your name,” another praised.
“It’s so refreshing to see a young superstar who cares so much about making the fan experience special and making each moment feel big. Wemby is such a treasure,” a third revered.
“A superstar that doesn’t play too cool and can engage with the fanbase like this is special. Not sure if it’s European vs American thing… but Wemby is different,” a fourth added.
The Spurs will have off on Christmas Eve before facing off against the Oklahoma City Thunder once again, this time in OKC on Christmas Day.
