The UFC’s Fight Night card for the week may be lacking a little bit of star power, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any recognizable faces in the UFC Apex. While the main event might not feature names that are well-known to casual MMA fans, the main card opener has a surprise in store for those fans.
The opening bout of the main card features a matchup between two fighters with a knack for showing up on highlight reels. Joaquin Buckley will be taking on Abdul Razak Alhassan in a fight that is sure to feature plenty of action in the cage.
However, it’s who will be outside of the cage that will interest some fans. According to TMZ, Buckley has recruited Commander Dale Brown to corner him tomorrow night. While that might not be a name you recognize, you’ve surely seen Brown’s videos on social media.
Brown’s self-defense videos have repeatedly gone viral because of their questionable techniques and have been spoofed by many across the internet. Now, he’ll get a chance to show off his “expertise” in Buckley’s corner.
It’s not the first time we’ve seen this kind of cornering decision in the UFC. Steven Seagal once claimed he taught Anderson Silva the front kick he used to knock out Vitor Belfort at UFC 126 and that he would be in contact with Silva’s head coach during a UFC title fight.
Mike Perry once famously had his girlfriend as the only person in his corner for a UFC fight and won a clear decision against Mickey Gall.
Now Buckley will look to recreate the success found with those two famous corners. Buckley himself isn’t unfamiliar with becoming a viral sensation on social media. In his second UFC fight, he landed an unbelievable spinning back kick to KO Impa Kasanganay. That moment was every on social media that weekend.
This fight at UFC Fight Night: Hill vs Walker is a big opportunity for Buckley, so hopefully this decision will work out for him.
