College football officials officially hate fun. Portland State drew a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct because of a viral touchdown celebration that was not flagged even one time by its NFL counterparts.
Meanwhile, the Big Sky Conference is actively promoting the behavior on social media.
If you are not yet familiar with the latest trend, it began in the Southland Conference last weekend. Incarnate Word wide receiver Jalen Walthall celebrated a 50-yard touchdown catch with a headstand.
Most people think of a headstand in its most simple form, where two hands serve as anchors in a tripod-like manner. This was not that. Walthall snapped his arms at his side and stood only on the top of his helmet while as stiff as a board. It was the funniest touchdown celebration of all-time.
However, the shenanigans drew a flag.
Although the headstand celebration drew a penalty on Saturday, it went extremely viral on social media and NFL players took note. Drake London and Amon-Ra St. Brown paid homage to Walthall with a pair of headstands during their respective wins over the Packers and Cowboys.
Neither player was penalized.
For perhaps the first time in football history, the NFL actually looked more fun than college. Everybody enjoyed the headstand, nobody was harmed, it wasn’t rude or excessive. There is no need for a flag.
Unfortunately, the Big Sky Conference did not adhere to the standard set by the pros. Portland State wide receiver Quincy Craig received a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty for his headstand. Lame.

Sports are supposed to be fun. No-handed headstands are fun. Penalties are not.
To make matters worse, the Big Sky Conference penalized a player for a harmless celebration and then turn right around to promote the harmless celebration on social media in a joyous manner… after it was already flagged as unsportsmanlike. It’s such a bad look.
