The Virginia football team will be without Jahmal Edrine in the 2026 season. The wide receiver was reportedly arrested and taken into custody Thursday following indictment by an Albermarle County grand jury.
Edrine is being held in Albermarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail as the Cavaliers begin winter workouts. His career with the program appears over ahead of his final season.
More from The Cavalier Daily on his recent arrest:
The 22-year-old was subject to investigation beginning Aug. 25, following a report to the Albemarle County Police Department by an unnamed victim who reported having been assaulted by Edrine one day prior. It is not known whether the reported incident occurred on Grounds, or if the victim was a student of the University.
It is unclear whether the football program or Virginia Athletics were aware of the investigation, which began five days before the first game of this past season Aug. 30.
Who is Jahmal Edrine?
The wide receiver was entering his final season with the Cavs after making two previous stops. He signed with Florida Atlantic as a three-star recruit from Fort Lauderdale in 2021.
He appeared in two games with the Owls as a freshman before racking up 570 receiving yards and six scores in Year 2, both of which remain career highs.
After two seasons in Boca Raton, he left for the Big Ten. In his lone season at Purdue, Edrine caught 23 passes for 365 yards.
Last offseason, he transferred to Virginia. He became a weapon in the Cavaliers’ offense, recording 46 receptions for 564 yards.
UVA announced Edrine’s return on January 6th of this year, signaling an NIL agreement between the two parties with the transfer portal window open.
The football program posted a tweet about the return on X. It has since been deleted.

He’s also been scrubbed from the official 2026-27 Virginia football roster as the school officially cuts ties.
The Cavs will now be without their top two returning wideouts from last season. Trell Harris bolted for Oklahoma after an 800-yard season in 2025.
Jahmal Edrine was expected to be the No. 1 option given that departure. Now, neither is on the roster.
Just one month ago, things were trending in a positive direction for Edrine to have a big final season. Now, he loses out on NIL money and a potential NFL future.
The school confirmed that it is aware of the situation and that Edrine is no longer enrolled at the university.
