In perhaps one of the more ironic twists you’ll ever see in the NBA, Dallas Mavericks superstar Anthony Davis showed up to training camp for the 2025-26 season weighing 15 pounds heavier than he did a year.
This comes after the Mavs traded former superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Davis, in large part because Dallas wasn’t happy with Doncic’s continued weight gain.
Now Doncic is looking as svelte as ever, while Davis showed to Mavs’ camp weighing 268 pounds, 15 pounds heavier than the 253 pounds he played at a year ago.
Anthony Davis Says That His Weight Gain Is Intentional!
Fans across the league laughed at the irony of Davis gaining weight in Dallas while Doncic lost weight in LA. But the Mavericks power forward says it’s all part of the plan.
In fact, he says it’s something that he tries to do every season.
Anthony Davis on his weight going into camp:
“I feel good….I’m usually like 255, 258. I never want to come in at my playing weight because then I lose weight during the season and then I’m too small. I lose about 10 to 12 pounds very quickly.” #MFFL pic.twitter.com/oxDtjqqv84

“I feel good. I kind of almost going into every season, because I put on so much weight over the summer, then by the time November comes, I’m usually like 255, 258,” Davis told reporters. “I never want to come in at my playing weight, because then I lose weight during the season and then I’m too small. I lose about 10 to 12 pounds very quickly. During camp, I already lost five pounds – all the running and playing. So l’m never concerned about that. I feel great. I’m moving great. I feel good.”
That’s a reasonable explanation! And Davis’s weight has never been a concern or issue at any point in his career until now. In fact, early in his career, some wondered if Davis would be able to gain the weight necessary to play in the post in the NBA.
However, it’s easy to see why Mavericks fans would be on edge about his recent weight gain, given the way things went down with Doncic. For now, all they can do is wait and see how things play out.
