Vols Baseball Coach Shuts Down Narrative That He’s Been Desperately Buying Players With NIL Money

Tennessee head baseball coach Tony Vitello has built the Vols into one of the most feared programs in all of the country. His team is gearing up for another trip to Omaha after dispatching Evansville in the Super Regional over the weekend.

While the success is noted, how he got to this point is still up for debate in the eyes of many. Is coaching to be credited, or did he simply buy his most recent rosters with boatloads of NIL money?

Vitello took over the program in 2018 with Tennessee fresh off a 27-25 campaign where they won just seven conference games. He experienced a near-immediate turnaround in Knoxville.

The Vols have won at least 40 games in all but one season, with his debut campaign being the only outlier. That includes three 50-win outputs, one of which came in 2024.

At 55-12, Tennessee booked its ticket to the College World Series with a win on Sunday, meaning they’ll enter the field as the nation’s No. 1 overall seed.

It marks the team’s third trip to Omaha in the last four seasons.

Tony Vitello’s hiring at UTK came as college sports was undergoing major change. The introduction of NIL and the transfer portal have all but taken over the NCAA, with many believing it to be the most effective recruiting tool available.

And it just so happens the Vols have landed a Top 10 college baseball recruiting class every year since Vitello took over, with Tennessee boasting the No. 1 cycle in 2024 according to Perfect Game.

Given the quick turnarounds both in recruiting and on the field, some of the sport’s followers question whether players have been influenced by the almighty dollar – including opposing D1 coaches.

Chad Holbrook called NIL ‘Priority No. 1′ when speaking on the Vols’ baseball success.

The former South Carolina and current College of Charleston head coach joined the Inside the Gamecocks show last week to talk about postseason play.

Tennessee was brought into the conversation as hosts made a pitch for listeners to support the Gamecocks’ NIL programs.

“NIL is the No. 1 factor in big-time college baseball now,” Holbrook said. “Tennessee is where Tennessee is, without question, because of NIL… They have some great players because their NIL program is top-notch.”

Holbrook also credited UT coaches, but his comments continue a narrative that’s been circulated over the last few seasons given the Vols’ incredible success. Tony Vitello denies that his program was built on NIL payment alone.

While speaking to the media after Tennessee’s Super Regional win over Evansville, he blasted the insinuation.

“We’ve done it, I think, from the ground up, here,” the head coach said in Sunday’s postgame presser. “Anybody that’s thinking about visiting our place when we’re recruiting, and you think this is a place you can come and have your hand out to see how much money we can give you, don’t waste our time, and don’t waste your time either.”

He’s reportedly been furious with “bag” rumors, and he’s actually been heard saying that the situation is quite the opposite. Vitello claims that a number of prospects take less money to come to Knoxville because the want to play for a winner.

The program is bigger than an NIL budget!

The accusations obviously struck a nerve with the Vols baseball coach, but they’ll likely be back of mind come College World Series. Tennessee enters as the field’s top seed, and they’ll look to bring home the first national title in the team’s history.
