Light bulbs have been the standard mode of illuminating homes in the United States for more than a century after replacing the candles that were used for the purpose prior to the advent of electricity. However, Capitals defenseman Jakob Chychrun has apparently decided to take a very old-school approach to lighting his home after ditching the approach most people take for granted.
Thomas Edison is widely credited with inventing the incandescent light bulb he patented in 1879, but there were a number of people around the globe simultaneously working to hone the revolutionary invention that would eventually deal a crushing blow to the candle industry as electric lighting took the world by storm toward the start of the 20th century.
I can’t imagine there are many (if any) people reading this who know what it’s like to live in a world that’s not dominated by the light bulbs most people on the planet take for granted, and the fact that they’re infinitely safer and convenient than the flame-based approach they made practically obsolete means there are very few people who’d willingly opt for that alternative.
However, there’s at least one NHL player who’s decided to go that route courtesy of Washington Capitals defenseman Jakob Chychrun.
Capitals forward Dylan Strome appeared on a recent installment of NHL Unscripted with Virk and Demers and shed some light on what it’s like to play alongside Chychrun, who was traded to Washington last summer ahead of the start of his 10th NHL season.
The 26-year-old d-man has previously turned some heads thanks to his fairly unconventional diet, and that’s not his only quirky trait based on what Strome had to say about Chychrun’s decision to remove all of the light bulbs from his house at the 36:00 mark of the episode:
“He has a new thing every day. I heard yesterday that he’s no light bulbs. He’s doing candle-lit in his house now.
That’s what his thing was yesterday. So he was on to beeswax candles is what I heard is great for you. So now we’re all talking about beeswax candles.”
Strome didn’t share any information about Chychrun’s rationale, although there is evidence that suggests blue light from LED bulbs can have a negative impact on your circadian rhythm.
