The West Virginia baseball team will be without its top pitcher in the 2026 season. Chase Meyer has been booted from the team less than one month into his junior year.
The punishment is believed to have stemmed from a recent conversation overheard by the coaching staff. Manager Steve Sabins is hoping to keep order.

Sabins released a statement on the decision Tuesday. He provided no reasoning for Meyer’s mandatory exit.
The pitcher is no longer listed on the roster. The news comes just 10 games into the season. The Mountaineers will be forced to continue without their best arm.
Who is Chase Meyer?

The right-handed pitcher is viewed as a Top 200 MLB Draft prospect. His fastball tops out in the upper 90s while his curveball is one of the best in the sport.
In 2025, he posted a 9-2 record with a 3.94 ERA. Used mainly as a reliever, he struck out 63 batters in just 48 innings across 22 appearances.
As a result, he was selected as an All-Big12 performer in the preseason. While a finger injury put him a bit behind schedule for 2026, he’d appeared in two games this year, striking out five hitters in 3.1 frames.
West Virginia is 8-2. They are expected to be an NCAA Tournament team. They’ll have to finish up the year without Meyer in the bullpen.
Why was he dismissed?
WV Sports Nation says his dismissal stems from an overheard criticism of the coaching staff.
WVU Baseball head coach Steve Sabins dismissed Chase Meyer from the baseball program following a locker room exchange that sources close to Meyer say began as a private conversation among players…
The incident unfolded after a road game at Kennesaw State. According to sources close to Meyer, he and several teammates were talking in the locker room when Sabins overheard players criticizing some of the coaching staff’s in-game decisions and questioning why the team was traveling to Marshall. The road trip would extend an already grueling five-week stretch away from Morgantown with a significant series against Baylor just a few weeks away.
Sabins confronted Meyer, suspended him and told him not to return to the facility until further notice. Shortly after, Sabins sent Meyer a text message informing him he had been dismissed from the program entirely.
Sabins discovered he was the topic of conversation. He chose to boot Chase Meyer after having his authority questioned.
It will be interesting to see how this impacts both the team and Meyer’s career moving forward.
