West Virginia made a statement during its women’s college basketball game against Duke. The unranked Mountaineers defeated the No. 15-ranked Blue Devils with only five players, total, during the entire second half.
A dust-up right before halftime led to the ejection of seven players in total.
To make the whole thing even better, this unique non-conference college basketball game was played inside of a 100-year-old+ hotel ballroom in front of a rowdy West Virginia crowd. It was pretty incredible.
College basketball at the Greenbrier.
This is the second year of the Greenbrier Tip-Off. 10 different teams, eight men’s and two women’s, play nine different games over the course of 10 days.
The Greenbrier is located in White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia— kind of in the middle of nowhere.
Opened in 1913, the 11,000-acre luxury resort sits right below the Allegheny Mountains. There are 710 guest rooms, 20 restaurants and lounges, more than 55 indoor and outdoor activities and more than 35 different retail shops on the campus. It was added to the National Registry of Historical Places in 1974. A total of 28 different presidents have stayed at the five-star hotel. There is even a massive underground bunker that was meant to serve as an emergency shelter for the U.S. Congress during the Cold War.

All of this goes to say that there is a lot of history at the Greenbrier. And now it is home to an annual college basketball tournament played at the beginning of the season around Thanksgiving.
It is a pretty cool scene. More college basketball should be played at 100-year-old ballrooms if you ask me.
West Virginia upset Duke with only five players after a fight.
The No. 15-ranked team in the country held a three-point lead when the clock hit zero at halftime. Things got chippy.
A heated scuffle between Jordan Wood and Jordan Harrison led the entire West Virginia bench to clear out onto the floor to defend their teammate.

The entire Mountaineers bench was ejected as a result of the kerfuffle. As were Wood and Harrison.
Duke’s bench refrained from altercation so they were allowed to continue. Here’s another look:

The ejections left West Virginia with only five players — total — for the entire second half.
The six players who were ejected account for 51.1 points per game. A victory seemed improbable.
And yet, the Mountaineers kept fighting with help from a raucous quasi-home crowd.
I can’t begin to describe the atmosphere in here.

Mark Kellogg called it “the craziest game he’s ever been a part of in his coaching career, without question.” His team needed only five players to pull one of the most impressive upsets of all-time.
