West Virginia technically played an away college football game at Ohio on Saturday. However, the crowd at Penden Stadium featured just as much blue and gold as it did green and white.
The road team completely took over Athens!
Mountaineers fans were so intent on attending the unusual non-conference matchup that they bought all of the Bobcats’ college football season tickets. They were not going to miss a chance to support their team, no matter when or where.
West Virginia fans got creative.
This unique home-home-and-home agreement was finalized in 2021. West Virginia signed a three-game contract with Ohio University for 2025, 2027 and 2029.
The Mountaineers will host the Bobcats in Morgantown on Sept. 18, 2027 and Sept. 1, 2029. They traveled to Athens on Saturday.
Ohio opened single-game ticket sales for Sept. 6, 2025 in early August. The entire allotment was completely sold out in less than 90 minutes.
With that expectation in mind, some West Virginia fans got ahead of the outrageous resale prices and purchased full season tickets for a school they do not attend at the beginning of June.
That season ticket purchase guaranteed those Mountaineers fans a seat for this weekend. And, in most instances, it actually cost less than a single game ticket on StubHub or Ticketmaster.
Ohio fans were (almost) outnumbered.
The Bobcats student section arrived early to the game.
Meanwhile, the visiting fanbase could be heard cheering from inside the stadium. West Virginia fans completely invaded the parking lot to tailgate an away game.

There was a lot of gold in the crowd as kickoff neared closer.

The split looked to be about 60/40 in favor of the home team as the players ran through their final warmups.
We are just over 10 minutes away from kickoff and Peden Stadium is absolutely packed with a line of fans still waiting to get in. I’d estimate a 60/40 split of Ohio to WVU fans in the stadium. pic.twitter.com/EUZ6oZlqYa

Mountaineers fans seemed to be in the majority by the time the Bobcats took the field.

Those who did make the trip were forced to cross by the student section on the way to their seats.

It was a not-so-friendly welcome!

Shoutout to the West Virginia faithful. They said they were going to take over Ohio’s trap and they did.
