West Virginia University is going to play college football at Ohio University on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025. This unusual early-season matchup presents an interesting contrast between the Big 12 and the Mid-American conferences.

The Mountaineers will have more fans in the crowd than the Bobcats even though they are on the road.

Single game resale tickets are already listed at a steep price increase. As a result, it actually made more financial sense to buy tickets for the entire college football season than just the one game.

Why is West Virginia playing at Ohio?

This unique agreement was finalized in 2021. West Virginia signed a three-game contract with Ohio University for 2025, 2027 and 2029.

The home-and-home(-and-home) series will begin next month when the Mountaineers travel to Athens. The Bobcats are scheduled to return the favor with two trips to Morgantown on Sept. 18, 2027 and Sept. 1, 2029 assuming either of the two sides do not buy their way out or cancel.

Believe it or not, these two teams have played each other 17 times already! West Virginia is 13-4 against Ohio in previous meetings, including its most recent victory in 2001.

The college football game on Sept. 6 is already sold out.

The Bobcats opened single-game ticket sales for Sept. 6 against the Mountaineers on early Tuesday morning. They completely sold out in just over an hour. Approximately 75 minutes.

As a result, resale tickets are already skyrocketing in price.

The cheapest pair of tickets currently available for purchase on SeatGeek are listed at $157 per seat. The most expensive pair of tickets — one row up on the 50-yard-line — are listed at $1,032 per seat.

Those prices are only going to increase as supply shrinks!

It was a better investment to buy full season tickets.

Some West Virginia fans decided to get ahead of this issue. They purchased season tickets to every home game at Ohio University with the intention to attend just the one game on Sept. 6.

Season ticket packages went on sale at the beginning of June. According to the Ohio University department of athletics, packages to see the reigning MAC champions “started at $60 each and include all six home games.”

Every single season ticket package is completely sold out as of early June, on all levels. The only option left is resale.

Some Mountaineers fans saw the writing on the wall and got ahead of the problem. They purchased full-season ticket packages for the Bobcats as soon as they went on sale for anywhere from $60-300 depending on seat location.

They got a deal! A single resale game ticket to see their team play in Athens on Sept. 6 will cost anyone who did not already buy season tickets at least twice the amount.

Peden Stadium is going to be covered in blue and gold on that day. Fans wearing green are going to be out-numbered at their home stadium!
