Murray State is one of the greatest Cinderella stories in college baseball history. However, the folklore surrounding the lowest seed to reach the 2025 College World Series went too far.
Head coach Dan Skirka does not cut the grass!!
Murray State reached the college baseball national championship as the No. 4 seed in the Oxford Regional. It beat Ole Miss twice and Georgia Tech to advance to the Durham Super Regional. It won Games 2 and 3 against Duke to reach the College World Series.
The Racers are just the fourth No. 4 seed to make it all the way to the final eight. But who are they?!
Murray State is a public university located in Murray, Kentucky with an enrollment of 10,000 students. Murray’s total population is under 20,000. The 19th-largest city in the state is located just 10 miles from the Tennessee border, about 100 miles northwest of Nashville, 100 miles east of the Missouri border and 225 miles southwest of Louisville.

The Racers went 44-15 to reach the College World Series while playing on a field that looks like this:

Johnny Reagan Field is not the worst stadium in the country but it certainly isn’t the best. Built in 1989, it has a total capacity of 800 spectators. Just to compare, LSU’s Alex Box Stadium fits more than 10,000.
Needless to say, Murray State is not “supposed to” be here. The glass slipper fits the Racers!
As cool of a story as it is, the story got blown way out of proportion. Multiple “reports” on social media suggested that head coach Dan Skirka also cuts the grass at Reagan Field. That has since been debunked by the skipper himself. He sometimes wishes he could but he doesn’t.

Senior slugger Carson Garner also made sure to give a shoutout to the Murray State grounds crew.
Murray State’s head coach Dan Skirka does NOT cut the grass at the team’s field. 🤣

There you have it! A small school from southwest Kentucky, practically northern Tennessee, played its way through a gauntlet to reach the College World Series. The Racers are still America’s team but their head coach does not cut the grass. Myth debunked.
