Southern University overcame an early deficit against Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday afternoon to pick up a 31-9 win in conference play. That victory helped the Jaguars improve to 7-4 on the season while keeping them atop the standings in the SWAC West division.

It was Senior Day for the Jags, who saw one of their most veteran players make an impact play on an athletic defensive effort. Willie Miles has been with the program for four seasons. He’s currently having the most productive campaign of his career in Baton Rouge.

To date, he’s recorded 31 tackles, a pair of forced fumbles, and two sacks. In his most recent performance, he added a touchdown to the list!

Southern led 24-9 with just under a minute and a half remaining in the fourth quarter. Arkansas-Pine Bluff did its best to tack on a late score to get within a touchdown of the home team. It ultimately backfired.

The Jaguars defense pressured APB quarterback DJ Stevenson as he dropped back to throw a pass. He fumbled when he was hit from behind by a Southern pass rusher. Willie Miles found himself in the right place at the right time soon after as he scooped up the loose ball and scampered to the endzone.

Miles is 5-foot-9 and 350 pounds according to his athletic bio. Somehow, he was able to stay on his feet while shedding a would-be tackler near the goal line on that incredible run. He wouldn’t be denied!

The scoop and score touchdown put an exclamation point on the Southern victory, helping them to improve to 6-1 in conference play. He was visibly gassed on the sidelines after the fact.

The Jaguars clinched a spot in the SWAC Championship with the win, where they’ll face off against Jackson State in a rematch. Southern hopes to avenge a 33-15 setback that occurred in September. Southern will close out the year against Grambling in the 51st edition of the Bayou Classic next weekend before setting their sites on that conference title matchup.
