Courtney Williams would rather get paid $1 million than win a WNBA championship. The 31-year-old did not even hesitate with her decision.
She said the quiet part out loud!
Williams, a former McDonald’s All-American, played college basketball at South Florida. The Phoenix Mercury drafted her into the WNBA with the No. 8 overall pick in 2016. This current season is her 10th year in the league with five different teams, including the Connecticut Sun, Atlanta Dream, Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx. It is her second season with the lattermost organization.
Over the course of her career, Williams averages 12 points on 43.8% shooting, 3.8 assists and 5.3 rebounds in 27.5 minutes per game. She was named as an All-Star in 2021.
Although Courtney Williams has yet to win a WNBA championship, she made the playoffs in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. That is apparently good enough.
A content creator known as ‘Ice Sports’ recently asked a group of WNBA players whether they would prefer to win the league or to get paid $1,000,000. Diamond Miller would like both. Kayla McBride picked the chip because she already “made a lot of money in her career.” Natisha Hideman will use the championship to make a million dollars.
Williams went in a different direction. She wants the cash!
According to Sportrac, Courtney Williams’s career earnings total $925,770. WNBA players are not paid well. The money is not the same level as the NBA. Nowhere close. I get it. I might also choose the bag.
But you can’t say it out loud… How does that reflect on Williams? How would the Lynx feel?
At the end of the day, Courtney Williams really could not care less what people think. She is one of the most outspoken players in the league on every topic. She will not soon have to decide between a $1 million paycheck and a WNBA title. If she did, however, she would choose the money!
