Villanova guard Wooga Poplar was ejected from Monday’s college basketball game against Georgetown during the first half. He tried to throw a punch during a heated altercation, which led him to be charged with a Flagrant 2 foul.
However, the first-year transfer completely whiffed on his vicious open-hand jab so he was thrown out of the game without even getting his money’s worth. Awkward!
Poplar, a former four-star recruit, began his college basketball career at Miami. He transferred to play for Kyle Neptune at Villanova during the offseason after testing the NBA Draft waters. The 6-foot-5 senior point guard is averaging 14.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game with the Wildcats.
Those numbers are going to take a small hit after Monday’s incident. Poplar was tossed just seven minutes and 33 seconds into the game with only three points.
The whole thing was weird. Georgetown guard Jayden Epps was jostling for position on an inbounds play, which did not go over well with Wooga Poplar. They jawed back and forth for a moment until some of Epps’ teammates stepped in to break it up.
In that moment, Hoyas senior Micah Peavy said something to Poplar that really set him off. A switch flipped in his head and he suddenly got very angry. Fortunately, Jordan Logino was there to catch his backcourt counterpart before it got out of hand. Poplar swung (with an open hand) on Peavy and missed.
And extracurriculars between Villanova and Georgetown!

Big East officials put a stop to the shenanigans and immediately went to the video monitor to review the incident. They determined that Wooga Poplar deserved a Flagrant 2 for his attempted punch. They also slapped Peavy with a technical for whatever he said to inspire the jab attempt in the first place.
By rule, a Flagrant 2 results in an immediate disqualification.

The Big East Conference may choose to issue further punishment, like a suspension, later this week. In the meantime, Villanova was forced to continue without its best guard.
