When the Kansas City Chiefs used the final pick in the first round as part of a trade to trade up to the 28th-overall pick to take Texas speedster Xavier Worthy, everyone saw the vision. Patrick Mahomes throwing deep balls to someone who would instantly be one of the fastest players in the NFL.

And, early returns from Chiefs workouts over the offseason and early in training camp have been mostly good, as it’s hard to screw up running far and fast and having Patrick Mahomes throw the ball to you. But, footage from camp shows that Xavier Worthy has one very big weakness he still needs to address.

Xavier Worthy set the NFL Draft Combine record with a 4.22 40-yard dash back in March, which helped boost the Texas alum’s draft stock.

But, the big knock on him was his slight stature, as he weighed in at just 165lb at just under 6 feet at the combine.

And, that showed up at Chiefs training camp today. The Chiefs defense ran press coverage against Xavier Worthy, and it went very, very, poorly.

That is one of the worst reps out of a wide receiver that you’ll ever see.  He got bullied twice on that play, and the second time ended up on his bottom. And, before you say ‘oh, that’s a penalty’, as long as it’s within five yards of the line of scrimmage and the ball isn’t in the air, it’s completely legal.

The good thing for the Chiefs is they can find ways to keep him from getting pressed, like playing him in a stack and using him off the line of scrimmage. They have other guys to fill the role of press beater on the outside, namely Rashee Rice.

But, if Xavier Worthy is ever going to live up to the Tyreek Hill comparisons, he will surely need to get better at beating press coverage.

The Chiefs open up the preseason Aug 10 on the road against Jacksonville.
