Netflix Replaces Star Rating System With Thumbs

Netflix is ditching the 5-star system for a simpler thumbs up and thumbs down rating system. It will be much like Pandora or YouTube’s rating system.

“Five stars feels very yesterday now,” said Netflix Vice President of Product Todd Yellin. “We’re spending many billions of dollars on the titles we’re producing and licensing, and with these big catalogs, that just adds a challenge.”

Netflix tested the system and found that the thumb system had advantages over the star ratings. In 2016, the streaming system discovered that the thumb system received 200% more ratings than the traditional star-rating system.

The system will introduce a new percent-match feature that will display which movies and TV shows are right for an individual subscriber by an algorithm based on your past activity.

“For example, a show that should close to perfectly fit a user’s taste may get a 98% match. Shows that have less than a 50% match won’t display a match-rating, however,” Variety reports.

“We made ratings less important because the implicit signal of your behavior is more important,” Yellin said.

So what says you? Thumbs or stars?
