After the UCLA campus was put on lockdown for an active shooter yesterday afternoon it’s no surprise that people flocked to social media to express their frustrations with gun control, as well as mourn the loss of two victims:

Just saw that the UCLA shooting was over a grade dispute. As a college professor, it's absolutely terrifying.

I think part of last night's insomnia was b/c of the #UCLAShooting. As a professor, It's just so unsettling. As a country, it's even more so

One celebrity, however, drew a bit of a shit storm when she tried to throw in her own two cents, and that celebrity would be Debra Messing. In a now-deleted tweet, Messing wrote “HORRENDOUS Watching news about shooting at UCLA with casualties while taking selfie 2bring awareness to Gun Violence,” and yes she included a fucking selfie:
I could go on and on about how this is a vapid grab for attention disguised as a sincere attempt at empathy, but comedian Anthony Jeselnik does a better job than I do:
In any case, Twitter was PISSED:

OMG how courageous of you Debra. You deserve a medal. Thanks for shifting the attention away from the actual crisis!!

You have already belittled the effort with the your timing.A selfie is not taking a stand either, pathetic keyboard activist

Brilliant. Nobody on twitter had heard of gun violence till you shot out that selfie. You brave starter of dialogue.

Realizing her gaffe, Messing later posted the following apology tweet…

…but that doesn’t mean everything was all hunky-dory again:
that doesn't make it better. You should have known that it was a dumb and offensive thing to do

Oh, Twitter. What a stupid fucking soapbox you are.
