A Michigan woman showed off her husband’s Costco hack for getting steak for a better value. However, commenters couldn’t decide if the $177 steak actually saves the couple money.
In a video with over 121,000 views, TikToker Sam (@samgallanis) shows the massive 15-pound steak her husband begged to buy “for months.”
“He claims it’s a better deal than if you were to buy the steaks individually at that price point,” she says. “So today he finally bought it.”
She says the couple plans to cut and vacuum seal each steak to store in their freezer. Ultimately, the steak produced 16 individual steaks, for around $11 per steak. She says that the individually cut steaks at her Costco cost around $18.
Did They Actually Get A Good Deal On Costco Steaks?
While the couple was happy with their purchase, some commenters suggested that breaking down the massive steak might not be a great deal. Instead, they encouraged shoppers to price out their steak by the pound rather than per steak.
“Soooo $11.80 per lb??? That’s OK, I guess. It literally should say that on the label then you can just look at other labels of smaller packs & compare,” one wrote.
“It either cost more or less per LB. You could cut it into 60 steaks if you wanted, doesn’t make it a better or lesser value,” a second explained.
Another added, “Just look when buying it in Costco. It shows the price per pound for pre cut steaks and for the uncut piece. It’s a five dollar bound difference.”
However, the uncut steak actually has a $5 difference per pound from the more expensive pre-cut steak. So, the couple likely got more steak for their money. Other shoppers said they buy the uncut slabs for this reason, too.
“We do this with the pork loins! Such a good deal,” a commenter shared.
Another said, “We did this yesterday! It’s like $12 per pound vs $18 if you buy individual steaks.”
What’s The Most Cost-Effective Way To Buy Meat At Costco?
Shoppers on the r/Costco subreddit continued to debate the best meat deals from the members-only warehouse.
“$9.99 for a Striploin that you butcher yourself is one of the better deals for sure! Costco is out there charging $7-$8 for sirloin and eye of round in the meat trays. A little effort gets you a $15/lb NY Strip!” one shopper suggested.
Others go to the business center, which is intended for restaurant owners, to get even larger slabs. One wrote, “Business center and get a strip-loin, tenderloin, or a rib roast then cut them into steaks. Look on YouTube ‘How to trim a X’ and it will give you step by step to break it down.”
“If your warehouse carries it, try the flat iron steak. 9.99lb and is as tender as a ribeye which is 18.99,” another offered. “That’s been my hack recently.”
@samgallanis Just a lil PSA for all the steak lovers out there #costco #costcofinds #grillingseason #fyp
