Last year, the world was introduced to Tilly Norwood, who was positioned as the world’s first A.I.-generated actress. However, it would appear that the company behind the nonexistent performer has some kinks to work out after its creation randomly started speaking Chinese in the middle of an interview.

Virtually every industry in existence is poised to be impacted by the rise of artificial intelligence, and the world of entertainment is no exception.

Real, actual people who’ve spent years engaging with the creative arts have seen their jobs threatened and their professions infiltrated by A.I. technology capable of producing music, crafting visual effects, and even creating entire movies and television shows that have become an increasingly convincing replication of the real thing.

Those developments have largely impacted people who work behind the scenes, but last year, a studio based in the United Kingdom attempted to put the ones who make a living in front of the camera on notice by unleashing Tilly Norwood, a digital “actress” whose existence can be credited to A.I.

However, her performance still leaves a bit to be desired based on how she fared during a recent television interview.

Norwood was created by Particle6 Group, which was founded by a Dutch actress and comedian named Eline Van der Velden. She asserted it was only a matter of time until the digital thespian was signed by a real, actual talent agency when the project was revealed in 2025, although it doesn’t appear that prophecy has come to fruition.

We got our first real look at what Norwood brings to the table when a music video for a song called “Take the Lead” was released earlier this year.

The studio has been doing what it can to keep drumming up hype after convincing a number of news outlets to conduct interviews with the glorified chatbot this week.

Norwood’s appearances on CBS News and The Today Show (among others) largely went off without a hitch, but that was not the case with the discussion that unfolded when she joined Piers Morgan Uncensored.

On Friday, we were treated to a clip where a real Scottish actor named Tom Conti asked Norwood about the particulars of the productions she stars in, and she started answering the question before cutting herself off and continuing in Chinese for around 15 seconds.

Based on an admittedly rough translation I got after running the clip through Google Translate, it appears Norwood restarted the answer she was giving in English and delivered it in Mandarin before Conti interjected and she corrected herself.

Whoever (or whatever) is responsible for Norwood’s social media presence attempted to laugh off the slip-up while replying to the tweet while highlighting her ability to speak over 30 languages.

We live in some truly strange times.
