Airbnb has provided travelers with alternatives to more traditional lodging options for close to two decades, but there can be some downsides to opting for one over a hotel. That includes hosts who make guests serve as their cleaning staff, and many of them are less than thrilled with a new policy banning them from doing so.
There are a number of companies that specialize in organizing short-term rentals, but none of them have a bigger share of that particular market than Airbnb. The platform has been connecting hosts with guests since 2008, and in 2025, users collectively booked over 533 million nights at more than eight million properties around the globe.
There are plenty of perks that come with staying in a standalone home instead of a hotel or a motel, but if you’ve used Airbnb, you’ve likely been greeted by a sheet of paper (or an entire binder) filled with rules you’re expected to follow during your stay.
There are many hosts that put a reasonable set of guidelines in place, but there are plenty of stories concerning homeowners that attempt to rule the property they’re renting out with an iron fist while forcing guests to handle a variety of chores you wouldn’t have to worry about if you were staying at a place with dedicated on-site staff.
However, that era has come to an end.
Some Airbnb hosts are revolting over a new policy that bans them from making guests do chores before checking out
Most Airbnb listings come with a cleaning fee, but if you’ve ever paid one and discovered a host still left a list of tasks you’re expected to attend to before checking out, you’re certainly not alone.
It’s one thing to attempt to leave a place in the same shape it was when you entered it out of respect. However, at the end of the day, many people who are traveling (especially those who are on vacation) don’t want to devote more time than necessary to doing laundry or washing dishes, especially when they’ve paid an additional amount to cover the cost of someone coming in to clean after they vacate the premises.
On Wednesday, Airbnb sent an email to hosts alerting them to a new policy that bans them from instructing guests to perform chores that “require significant effort or time, or would typically be performed by a cleaner,” specifically mentioning “stripping the bed, taking trash offsite, or washing and putting away dishes.”
The new rules apply to “all reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026,” and while it’s a pretty welcome change for people booking a stay, it has riled up plenty of people on the other side of the transaction.
A subreddit devoted to Airbnb hosts was a goldmine of angry reactions courtesy of people who threatened to raise cleaning fees, and others took to Facebook to voice their displeasure and announce their decision to quit the platform as a result.
Reading the Airbnb hosts subreddit to inject myself with some dopamine this morning. They are in a fucking tizzy over the new “you can’t have your guests do chores” rule https://t.co/CPtliDmu1O
