20th Century Studios has released the first trailer for Alien: Romulus, the first entry in the iconic Alien franchise since 2017’s Ridley Scott-directed Alien: Covenant.

Check out the official synopsis and trailer for Alien: Romulus below, via 20th Century Studios:

“The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful Alien franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

Alien: Romulus is set to be the 7th film in the franchise following Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), Alien Resurrection (1997), Prometheus (2012), and Alien: Covenant (2017). The sequel, Aliens, was famously directed by James Cameron and is widely considered to be one of the greatest sequels ever made.

There were also two crossovers with the Predator franchise that were released in the mid-2000s: Aliens vs. Predator in 2004 and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem in 2007.

An Alien TV series is also currently in the works at FX from Fargo creator and writer Noah Hawley. Production is set to commence this year ahead of its premiere in 2025.

In the lead role is a 25-year-old actress who has recently made a name for herself thanks to her work in On the Basis of Sex, Vice, Devs, Mare of Easttown, and as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s 2023 film Priscilla. Later this spring, Spaeny will also be seen starring in Alex Garland’s Civil War.

Alongside Spaeny, Alien: Romulus also stars David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.

Alien: Romulus, produced by original franchise director Ridley Scott (Scott directed Alien, Prometheus, and Alien: Covenant) will be released in movie theaters in the United States on Friday, August 16.
