A woman named LaToya Johnson explained in a now-viral video why it is vitally important for you to always keep your receipt.

In our daily life, we are constantly coming across receipts. While many of us throw them away, one woman presented a reason why it’s worth hanging on to them.

Some people refuse to touch receipts due to BPA and even estrogen concerns. But based on this TikToker’s argument, it might be time to rethink.

The clip begins with TikToker LaToya Johnson (@latoyajohnson267) saying, “Always get a receipt.”

“I don’t care if you’re at the grocery store, at the gas station, at a restaurant, getting makeup—I don’t care where it is—always get a receipt because a receipt can sometimes save your life,” she said.

“It can always prove that you were not at the place that somebody else say that you were. They can say, ‘Oh it looks like that person that committed a crime.’ If you can pull up the receipt, then they can pull up the camera. Always take your receipt. I don’t care if you’re not gonna use it late. Always, as a Black person, especially, always get your receipt.”

The video has amassed 125,300 views.

‘As A Cashier, I Tell People This’

Many commenters agreed.

“10000000% and I always be taking a picture of it the moment I get it,” one wrote.

“As a cashier I tell people this all the time please take it idc if you got a bag of chips please keep a copy,” a second said.

“My mom taught us this from when we was kids, for this sole reason alone,” a third remarked.

“This allowed my brother to overrun his conviction,” a fourth shared.

Similarly, a fifth added, “I know of a guy who was accused of a crime but because he had a receipt he was able to prove that he wasn’t there when the crime took place.”

Why Else Should You Keep Your Receipt?

Beyond safety, there are many practical reasons for keeping your receipt, as explained on a post on the r/AskUK subreddit.

“People who ask for the receipt in shops, what are you doing with it?” the Redditor asked.  “Just seen a chap ask for his receipt when buying a sandwich and some milk.”

They added, “I understand keeping the receipt for clothing or electronics where you might have need to return or claim on warranty. Also those that are buying for others or on expenses, but I didn’t get the impression that that was the case with this one.”

“Could be self-employed and using it as business expenses, or he’s on a business trip of some sort for his work and claiming it back,” one suggested.

“If it’s a supermarket with an ANPR car park I keep it a few weeks in case I have to dispute some parking charge,” a second explained.

“Perhaps he was buying for someone else and he wanted to prove how much it cost,” a third speculated.

A fourth said, “Could be going into other shops after, they could need the receipt to prove they haven’t shoplifted the items from there.”

And as fifth added, “I regularly have a receipt to check I haven’t been ripped off and the discounted stuff has come off. Common sense ain’t it.”
