Anne Hathaway suggested that all movies where a dog dies should be rated R
While Anne Hathaway has been a fixture of Hollywood for over two decades now, she may be having the best year of her career so far. 2026 sees her starring in five films, with one of them The Odyssey, en route to becoming one of the biggest movies ever made and is expected to see her contend for her second Academy Award next year.
In addition to The Odyssey, Anne Hathaway’s slate this year also includes The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mother Mary, Verity, and The End of Oak Street. As Hathaway cheekily put it, while discussing the release of Odyssey, Prada, and Mother Mary: “There’s a lot going on. Two movies have done unbelievably well and one movie… was very well respected.”

Her latest film, The End of Oak Street — which is being hailed as the best dinosaur movie since the original Jurassic Park — hits theaters this weekend. In addition to Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery, the film also prominently features a dog as the movie’s central family owns an Australian Cattle Dog named “Starbuck.”
Given the dog’s role in the film, its cast has naturally been asked some canine-related questions during the press tour — one of which lead Hathaway to suggest that any movie that includes the death of a dog should automatically be rated R regardless of the rest of the film’s content.
“I feel like movies that kill dogs should automatically be rated R. It doesn’t matter if anybody curses, it doesn’t matter if there’s violence — if a dog dies, it’s R-rated,” Hathaway told Complex.
After The End of Oak Street , Hathaway’s fifth and final film of the year will be Verity, an adaptation of the Colleen Hoover novel of the same name alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Harnett.
