A Texas man went out to a popular bar in Austin and was shocked to discover that he was charged $30 for a cocktail. Why does it cost so much?
More and more people are starting to ditch going out due to the costs associated with it. And who can blame them when a single cocktail can set them back $30?
A Texas man, Dollar Menu (@dollar_menu_), shares that he went to a popular bar on Austin’s 6th Street, and a whiskey sour there cost him $30.
“So this bar right here charges $30 per drink. Crazy,” he begins, referring to the Dizzy Rooster.
The first attempt at the drink didn’t satisfy his tastebuds.
“First time they made it, the whiskey sour had some pumpkin spice in it,” he claims.
Considering the drink was $30 and he was displeased with it, he requested the bartender to remake it.
So the bartender did remake the drink, but the second attempt wasn’t much better, he says.
A spokesperson for Dizzy Rooster issued the following statement in an email to BroBible:
“Dizzy Rooster has been a part of the 6th Street entertainment district since 2003, and we’ve always taken pride in treating our customers fairly, offering transparent pricing, and providing a great experience.
We looked into this particular interaction with our staff, who remember the customer. At approximately 1:50 a.m., he ordered a double whiskey sour. Contrary to the description in the TikTok, we don’t carry pumpkin spice ingredients or offer a pumpkin spice whiskey sour on our menu.
The customer wasn’t satisfied with the initial preparation, so our bartender remade the drink, and the customer was happy with the second one.
For context, a single whiskey sour is $13, and a double is $26, plus applicable sales tax.
Dizzy Rooster has built its reputation over the years by treating people right and providing a welcoming, enjoyable environment. We take that responsibility seriously and will continue to do so.”
‘Austin Is A Rip Off In Every Way’
Viewers in the comment section agreed with the man that $30 for a drink is expensive.
“Austin is a rip off in every way,” one commenter wrote.
While one viewer questioned the whiskey sour drink order on 6th street in the first place.
“Who tf orders a whiskey sour at a bar on 6th street in the first place? Also a whiskey sour is properly made with egg white and lemon juice not ‘sour mix,’” one commented.
“Classic whiskey sour is simple. You need bourbon or rye whiskey, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup. Shake it with ice, strain, and you’re done,” the creator responded.
While the bar has an overall high Google review rating of 4.3, several reviewers complained about the costs of their drinks. “Last night, my girlfriend ordered a double Bullet Rye and Coke, only to be hit with an outrageous $40 charge for a single drink. … While Austin’s prices may be higher, this is beyond unreasonable,” one said.
Why Are Cocktails So Expensive Now?
Restaurant Business reports that the rise in cocktail prices is making people drink less or stay home entirely. Alcohol consumption is hitting lows.
Delish reports that “boozeflation” is real, and there are a few reasons for this. When a cocktail becomes trendy, like an Aperol Spritz, restaurants will raise the prices, as they know people will still order it. Rising costs in labor and ingredients, as well as supply changes mean more money the establishment pays. Those costs usually get passed onto the customer.
Additionally, if one restaurant decides to charge $30 for a cocktail, other restaurants close by may match the price.
