As expected, Avengers: Endgame was an absolute beast at the box office. But as much as Avengers: Endgame and expected to dominate the box office, not even movie industry experts expected this kind of spectacular opening weekend.

The Avengers have assembled to make box office history. Avengers: Endgame made an estimated $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office for its debut. The movie made $1.2 billion in only five days. Marvel’s blockbuster posted the greatest movie opening of all-time. Avengers: Endgame is not only the first movie ever to cross over the $1 billion mark in an opening and is the fastest to reach $1 billion, the previous record was Avengers: Infinity War that took 11 days to make $1 billion.

The dollar amounts are staggering, even when compared to the previous top blockbusters. The film’s prequel Avengers: Infinity War, had made formerly held the record by making $641 million for its opening weekend last year and Avengers: Endgame is out here making over $1.2 billion.

Endgame now owns the record for the highest opening night in North America by making a whopping $156.7 million, which includes $60 million from Thursday night previews. This is a 32 percent increase over the previous record holder Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which reeled in $119 million in 2015.

But it wasn’t just the worldwide box office that the Avengers dominated, Endgame destroyed the record for an opening in North America. Endgame raked in an estimated $350 million domestically this weekend, blowing away the previous record by its prequel Infinity War, which made $258 million. Hollywood insiders expected Avengers: Endgame to make between $260 million and $285 million in its debut.

Avengers: Endgame was a smash hit in China where it made an astounding $330 million. The Marvel movie obliterated the record for biggest international opening by earning $859 million overseas. The previous record was held by 2017’s The Fate of the Furious with a paltry $433.2 million overseas. Endgame nearly doubled the previous record holder.

This is another gigantic cash haul for Marvel Studios, which has made nearly $20 billion at the worldwide box office over the last 10 years.

“We’re watching a monumental moment in the history of cinema unfold — one that the entire world is experiencing together,” said Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Boxoffice.com.

The previous record for money made per theater was $59,900 by 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Endgame blew that number out of the water by making an insane $75,075 per theater while being shown at 4,662 theaters. Endgame‘s advanced ticket sales on Fandango were also extraordinary with more than 8,000 showings sold out.

But it wasn’t just monetary victories for Avengers: Endgame because it also received critical acclaim and boasts a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A+ CinemaScore. The question is what movie could possibly beat these mindblowing box office numbers?
