A bouncer said he was left in shock after overhearing a customer's drink order. But, as it turns out, a lot of other people like it, too.
A former bouncer shared the most unhinged drink order he heard while on the clock.
Dantrell Edwards (@dantrelledwards) begins his post with a photo of himself by grimacing into the camera. His lips are turned up in disgust, and a text overlay in his video highlights what evoked his facial expression. “There was one time when I was a bouncer a guy ordered a triple Rumple Minze on the rocks. And I couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” he writes.
Folks who responded to his video rattled off some of the more heinous drink orders they’ve encountered while working in bars. One wrote, “I had a guy ask for a Rumple Bomb. Rumple shot into a glass of Red Bull. I told him, ‘I’m about to call the cops on this decision.'”
Another said, “Trust, apple juice and Rumple.”
A third wrote, “Fire & Ice. Rumple & Fireball but I think triple Rumple sounds worse.”
There was no shortage of strange Rumple concoctions. One woman wrote that her boyfriend “is a big Rumple, Tequila, and Sprite fan.” And there was someone else who said that triple Rumple Minze shots aren’t all that uncommon. But what did make them do a double take was this following order: “Rumple, Malibu, and Dr. Pepper.”
“Had to throw his a– out,” another said, joking about the bouncer’s reaction to the bizarre order. The ex-bouncer liked this comment, indicating he was on board.
What Is Rumple Minze?
For Cinnamon lovers, there’s Fireball. If candy canes, Mentos, and peppermints are your thing, then Rumple Minze may be your alcohol of choice. It’s a German-branded Peppermint Schnapps distributed by Diageo out of its Scharlachberg Distillery located in Wiesbaden, Germany. In the U.S., bottles of the stuff are imported to Indiana’s Paddington Brands, LLC.
According to Vine Pair, the drink earned its reputation as a “handshake shot” among bartenders. This term refers to an unspoken understanding between different industry workers. If you share a shot of Rumple with someone, then you’re in the know.
The drink is so minty that Vine Pair says it earned the moniker “bartender’s mouthwash.”
But what really differentiates Rumple from other minty liqueurs is its alcohol-by-volume percentage. Whereas comparably flavored products like the Creme de Menthe pack lower ABVs (28% for the Tempus Fugit product), Rumple Minze is 100 proof, giving it 50% ABV. That means this stuff can get you buzzing fast in a relatively short amount of time.
Furthermore, the same outlet wrote that Rumple managed to divorce itself from other peppermint schnapps products with aggressive marketing campaigns in the ’80s and ’90s. One set of ads, for instance, featured in Playboy magazine, shows drawings of Scandinavian warrior women wielding swords. They’re riding polar bears and are scantily dressed, brandishing shields of the Rumple Minze crest design. Beside them are large bottles of the liqueur.
‘Rumple Is Just More Hardcore’
Vine Pair also chatted with bartenders about the drink’s status as a handshake shot. According to one Virginia head bartender, Sam Park, you can tell a lot about a person’s status in the drinking business by how much Rumple they can down at once. “If you sit next to someone at a bar and they take four shots of Rumple Minze in one sitting, they’re pretty seasoned. Not everyone can handle that,” he said.
With such a relatively high ABV, you can certainly down Rumple as a shot. Although, there’s no shortage of amalgamations that use its strong peppermint profile. Some of the combinations included in this list of Bar None drinks do seem like reality TV show challenges rather than enjoyable drinks, however. Dead Nazi at Stalingrad, for instance, pairs Jagermeister with Rumple Minze and Wild Turky 80 Proof Bourbon.
Another utilizes its minty flavor in more appropriate ways, like Candy Cane #2, which mixes Baileys Irish Cream, hot chocolate, and Rumple Minze. If hot boozy drinks are your thing, there are some others that feature the liqueur, too. Baileys Mint Kiss takes the Irish Cream and throws in coffee, some peppermint schnapps, and Rumple Minze. Or if that’s too refreshing for you, you could ditch the Baileys and schnapps and just use hot coffee, Cognac, and Rumple Minze for a minty coffee potion.
One highly-rated Rumple Minze-based hot cocktail on Liquor.com is the Rumplesnuggler. The website indicates that this drink is particularly great after hitting the slopes because its base is 8 ounces of hot cocoa. Throw in 1 1/2 ounces of Bailey’s Irish Cream along with an ounce of Rumple Minze, and garnish it with some whipped cream. Then, you’re left with a delightfully sweet wintry treat, if you like peppermint, that is.
