Last November a group of many of the female stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe got together for one epic photo. Among the women in the photo was Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson, who will be playing Carol Danvers, AKA Captain Marvel, in a film set to be released in 2019.
The timing of this and the upcoming release of Black Panther is probably no coincidence. Marvel is just striking while the iron is hot.
For those unfamiliar with Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers, here’s how Screen Rant describes her.
Captain Marvel tells the story of Carol Danvers, a U.S. Air Force pilot who gains powers after an accident involving Kree alien technology. She was originally known in the comics as Ms Marvel, before she took up the mantle of Captain. To date, she has served as a member and/or leader of the Avengers, S.W.O.R.D., the Ultimates, Alpha Flight, and even the Guardians of the Galaxy, in comic book form.
Larson and others also shared some photos of her “flight” training with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and a trip to Nellis Air Force Base.
The plot of the film still hasn’t been revealed, but we do know that Samuel L. Jackson will be in the movie playing Nick Fury (with both eyes!), as will Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, and DeWanda Wise. The setting will be in the early 1990s with the Skrulls as the movie’s villains.
Captain Marvel is scheduled for release on March 8, 2019. Larson will also play Captain Marvel in the fourth Avengers film, scheduled for a May 3, 2019 release.
