Earlier this year, the family of action movie legend Bruce Willis announced that the 68-year-old had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, officially bringing his legendary, decades-long career to an end.

And while the diagnosis is obviously a difficult one, the latest video of Willis that was shared by his ex-wife Demi Woore shows the former actor in apparently high spirits as he celebrated his birthday surrounded by his loving family.

“Happy birthday, BW! So glad we could celebrate you today. Love you and love our family. Thank you to everyone for the love and warm wishes – we all feel them,” Moore captioned her Sunday night tweet, which has racked up over 230,000 likes at the time of this writing.

Here is the definition of frontotemporal dementia, as per the Mayo Clinic:

Frontotemporal dementia is an umbrella term for a group of brain disorders that primarily affect the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. These areas of the brain are generally associated with personality, behavior, and language.

During his decades-long acting career — which first took off in the mid-1980s thanks to the sitcom Moonlighting — Willis established himself as an action movie icon with his role as John McClane in the beloved Die Hard franchise, ultimately appearing as the character five different times from 1988 to 2013.

In addition to his action icon status, however, Willis routinely showed off his legitimate acting chops while working for filmmaking auteurs such as Wes Anderson, Rian Johnson, M. Night Shyamalan, Quentin Tarantino, Terry Gilliam,  Steven Soderbergh, Luc Besson, and many more.

Despite his retirement, Willis’ film career isn’t officially over quite yet, as his final film role in the direct-to-video thriller Assassin is set to release on Friday, March 31. Willis’ final performance in a major theatrical release was as Frank Minna in Edward Norton’s 2019 directorial debut Motherless Brooklyn.
