Kate and Rooney Mara star together in Werner Herzog's 'Bucking Fastard'
Werner Herzog’s new film Bucking Fastard has a threesome scene, which is relatively benign territory for a Herzog-directed film. The scene in question, however, features Orlando Bloom alongside actresses Rooney Mara and Kate Mara, who are sisters.
Bucking Fastard stars Orlando Bloom opposite real-life siblings Kate Mara and Rooney Mara, who play twins Jean and Joan Holbrooke — described as “total equals” who speak in unison and mirror each other’s every move.
Loosely inspired by Freda and Greta Chaplin, real British identical twins from the 1980s who once had a restraining order taken out against them by a man they both became involved with, Bucking Fastard follows the Holbrooke twins as they search for an imaginary land where true love is possible.
As for the unique title, it refers to a synchronized verbal slip the sisters made while appearing in court.
The film, which marks the first time the sisters have been on screen together, premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 3, after Herzog turned down a non-competitive slot at Cannes earlier this year.

“You are in bed, and you have two women in your arms. How you deal with it, I cannot give instructions,” Herzog said, describing the minimal direction he gave Bloom on set.
Bloom called the scene “carnal,” pointing to “an innocence to the sisters” and describing it as “a very sincere sort of moment that was created.” He said he played his character, Gareth Mulroney, as “sensitive” and “out of his depth” throughout.
Kate Mara, working alongside her sister for the first time, put it simply: “We could have never imagined finding two roles in a film where we’re literally equals in so many ways.”
After debuting at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year, Bucking Fastard debuted to a 74% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, and has also been screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. You can check out a trailer for the film below.
