A Minneapolis woman was shocked to discover that her Chef Boyardee had a solid and chunky consistency. Viewers are convinced this is the result of weakening food regulations.

On Oct. 30, a woman (@sophistrom) showed viewers her Chef Boyardee ravioli in a viral TikTok that amassed over 1.9 million views as of Tuesday.

“I just opened this can of Chef Boyardee Beef Ravioli,” she said.

What Was Wrong With The Chef Boyardee?

She explains that the product is one of her favorites, but she was terrified when she opened the can to see the sauce had solidified into a rubber-like consistency.

“What the f— is that?” she said. “For those of you who aren’t familiar with this product… this is supposed to be tomato sauce, and the raviolis are supposed to be suspended in there.”

She clarified that the can was not labeled as being expired, as the date marked on the can was July 23, 2027.

Then, she proceeds to attempt to dump out the can on camera. However, she struggles to pour it out, having to vigorously shake the can before it comes out in large solid sections, with a watery, red liquid dripping out with it.

Overwhelmingly, the comments were terrified by the woman’s discovery.

“I knew something was wrong when you slammed the can down, and nothing flew out,” one user said.

“This literally looks like 3D-printed food,” added another.

Many users added that they believe this is the result of diminishing regulations by the FDA.

“Wow, I miss having food safety regulations,” said one commenter.

“We have no FDA,” added another. “I’m so over ts.”

What Caused This To Happen To Her Can Of Chef Boyardee?

Although the can displayed a 2027 expiration date, that does not guarantee the product remains safe. Expiration and best-by dates cannot account for every possible manufacturing or storage problem.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, consumers should never eat canned food that looks or smells unusual. They should also avoid cans that leak, bulge, or have significant dents.

It is likely that the item’s consistency was the result of food processing and storage problems, which can change the consistency of canned products. Temperature fluctuations and improper storage can also affect canned food quality. The USDA recommends storing commercially canned products in cool, dry locations.

Have There Been Changes To FDA Regulations?

While the comments were correct in noting that there have been recent changes to FDA regulations, that does not necessarily relate to the video in question. That said, the FDA announced plans to revoke or propose revoking 52 food standards in July 2025. These included standards for canned fruits and vegetables, dairy products, baked goods, and macaroni products.

However, these standards primarily govern food composition, ingredients, and production characteristics. Their removal does not automatically eliminate food safety requirements. In fact, a January 2026 Government Accountability Office report found that the FDA had established nine major rules under the Food Safety Modernization Act that require manufacturers to identify and address potential food safety hazards.
