  • Chris Hemsworth is set to star in a Mad Max: Fury Road prequel alongside Anya Taylor-Joy.
  • Taylor-Joy will be portraying a young Furiosa, the character made famous by Charlize Theron.
  • The new book Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road has revealed what Hemsworth’s role will be.

Ask anyone who knows anything about or remotely enjoys action movies will tell you that George Miller’s dystopian epic Mad Max: Fury Road is not only one of the great action flicks of the 21st century but perhaps of all time.

Released in 2015 after a grueling, multiple-years long production, Mad Max: Fury Road became an instant classic upon its release, instantly confirming that all the hell the cast and crew went through was worth it.

Since the film was released, its director — now 76-year-old George Miller — has been kicking around the idea of a Furiosa-focused prequel. Similar to Fury Road itself, though, the path to the prequel has been a long and complicated one, but with Anya Taylor-Joy locked in to star in the film and Chris Hemsworth set to star alongside her, the making of the highly-anticipated film is truly closer than ever as it’s been dated for a May 24, 2024 release.

That said, while the prospect of the Furiosa prequel is more real than ever, many questions still remain, such as what roles Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke (a relative unknown who replaced Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the cast — bummer) will be playing.

In the new book Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, author Kyle Buchanan has at least solved one of those mysteries as it’s been revealed that Hemsworth will be playing the film’s main villain, which represents a delicious against-type casting choice for the usually heroic Aussie actor.

“George saw Chris [Hemsworth] initially as a courtesy and then fell in love with the idea,” Fury Road Assistant Director P.J. Voeten said. “He’s going to play totally against type, the lead baddie. Unfortunately, we’ve got to find all of our other characters that aren’t around anymore: a new Immortan [Joe], a new Bullet Farmer, and a few others.”

As mentioned above, the Furiosa film — which Miller is touting as Australia’s biggest-ever production — is scheduled to hit theaters on May 24, 2024, although it wouldn’t be all that shocking if the date changes again. In addition to Furiosa, Hemsworth is also set to star in this summer’s Thor: Love and Thunder, and Spiderhead later this year. The 38-year-old is also currently in the midst of filming a sequel to Netflix’s Extraction.
