In a recent wide-ranging interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Man of Steel screenwriter David Goyer made a bunch of revelations about the film’s production.

Not only to Goyer admit that the studio pressured them into following up Man of Steel with Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice because they wanted to launch their “own MCU”, but he also claimed that producer Christopher Nolan met with the late, great Tony Scott about directing the film.

“It was a very deliberative process. Chris met with I want to say about five directors and it came down to Zack and another director, and it felt like Zack was the right call. I think Zack was the right call. It was really exciting, the fact that Zack wanted to shoot that movie handheld, which was I thought a brilliant idea,” Goyer said.

“What’s interesting in the Elseworlds version of what could have been is, Chris had already met with Tony Scott, so there’s a version of a Tony Scott Man of Steel in some parallel universe. I think Tony Scott doesn’t get as much credit as he should be given, because he was an equally phenomenal director as his brother, and that’s a movie I would have liked to have seen.”

Scott, the younger brother of the legendary Ridley Scott, tragically took his own life in 2012.

Prior to his passing, Scott was known for his decades-long career as a successful action director, helming films such as Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop II, Days of Thunder, True Romance, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State, Man on Fire, Deja Vu, The Taking of Pelham 123, Unstoppable, and more.

Ultimately, Warner Bros’ decision to choose Zack Snyder as the shepherd of the then-DCEU resulted in one of the most divisive and complicated modern movie franchises in recent memory.

In addition to 2013’s Man of Steel, Snyder would also direct its two sequels, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
