A Dallas woman went on a date with a man she describes as her “usual type,” and the pair shared a meal. But when the bill came, she suddenly wished he would have cancelled.
In a video with over 1.8 million views, TikToker Brittany Bowen (@brittanyybowen) sits in a pink robe and does her makeup routine while she recounts a recent date gone wrong. She says the man was her type and even picked her up in a Mercedes-Benz, which he claimed was “fully paid off.”
The pair got to the brunch restaurant and ordered $45 worth of food and drinks. Bowen notes that the bill would have been even lower if the man hadn’t ordered several cups of fresh-pressed orange juice.
She expected him to take care of the bill but couldn’t believe what he told her instead.
“He did not tell me before we ordered that he did not have money…He goes, ‘My card is frozen due to fraud,'” she recounts. “He’s like, ‘The banks don’t open on the weekends so I don’t have any money.'”
Did She Pay For The Date Instead?
Bowen admitted that she is a “people pleaser” and decided to cover the bill. However, she wonders when exactly he discovered that his cards were locked.
“And if you figured it out before you picked me up and took me on the date, why would you pick me up? Literally just cancel,” she exclaims.
That’s not the last thing he asked her to pay for. On their way to drop her off at home, his car ran out of gas.
“He says, ‘Hey I’m not going to make it all the way to your house. Can we stop at the gas station? And can you put some gas in my car?'” she says.
Bowen looks down at her makeup sponge in disappointment.
“So at this point I either put gas in the car or walk home,” she continues.
Ultimately, Bowen decided to put $20 of gas in his car, and he dropped her off.
Despite the date disaster, the man continued to text her for a week. Bowen says she left him on read.
“My read receipts are on,” she says. “I just eventually stopped responding.”
What Happens If Your Card Is Frozen On A Date?
While many viewers doubt that Bowen’s date actually had a fraud report on his credit cards, some men say it’s happened to them on first dates.
One man in the r/NavyFederal subreddit says he realized he froze his card because of “multiple fraud claims” as he was about to pay. He panicked and opened the app to unfreeze it but realized it was under “routine maintenance.”
Members of the r/AskMen subreddit share what they would do in the same awkward situation.
“Coolly play it off with the classic ‘that’s weird’ and furrowed brow and try another,” one suggests. “Or blame it on the reader. I’ve had two perfectly valid cards with sufficient funds/available credit fail on me in the past week…”
“Just say it as it is.. its a good situation to see how her personality is,” another writes.
“I would s— on the counter to take the attention away. Wtf are these questions,” a third jokes.
Viewers React To The Awkward Date
Commenters on the viral video joked with Bowen that the man may have intentionally “scammed” her into covering his food and gas on the date.
“Imagine the story he told his friends, this is so bad,” one writes.
Another remarks, “No babes , YOU took him on the date.”
“Babe this was a whole set up!” a third suggests.
Others say they would have handled his bizarre request differently.
A commenter says, “Girlllll I would’ve ubered myself home from the brunch place. Blocked IMMEDIATELY!”
“And I would have sent a request for $65 bright and early Monday morning,” a second suggests.
