Shane Gillis’ latest hosting stint on Saturday Night Live has again sparked controversy. Schitt’s Creek creator Dan Levy called out Gillis over his jokes about women in gyms being dressed like ‘w—–‘.
The Schitt’s Creek co-creator posted a video to Instagram Reels in response to a joke comedian Shane Gillis made about women’s gym clothes in his monologue while hosting Saturday Night Live over the weekend.
Dan Levy criticized Shane Gillis’ Saturday Night Live monologue, saying his joke about women’s gym clothes was misogynistic
During his set, Gillis said he hadn’t been to the gym in so long that he didn’t know women dressed like “whores” now, then told the audience not to look at women’s shorts because they were being filmed.

“Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores — it makes the men calling them whores misogynists,” Levy said, adding that he was “speechless that something like that can exist on live national television.”
Levy also said that “Men need to be defending women more,” stating that “This is not a women’s issue; this is an everybody issue.”
While Levy’s ends might be valid — calling women “whores,” especially on national TV, shouldn’t really be applauded, especially the simplicity of the joke (it wasn’t exactly a George Carlin classic, to say the least) — his means completely miss the point of where we aren’t currently at as a culture. No one has the time or energy to care about what a comedian said while telling jokes on SNL in the age of a perpetual affordability crisis, impending AI doom, and so on and so forth.
Levy himself is a former SNL host, having hosted the program’s 11th episode of the 46th season alongside musical guest Phoebe Bridgers in 2021.
It was Gillis’ third time hosting since he was fired from the show in 2019. Gillis has courted controversy on every team he’s hosted, with his latest episode also being marred by an on-air F-bomb during a “Green Eggs and Ham” sketch.

Despite the backlash, if Gillis remains willing, Lorne Michaels and Saturday Night Live will continue to have him back, given his status as one of, if not the top stand-up comic in the country. Interestingly enough, Gillis was also heavily featured in the documentary about Michaels, Lorne, that was released earlier this year and is currently streaming on Netflix. Whether it be Lorne having to kiss the ring and Gillis seeking a more mainstream audience, the pair have clearly landed on a partnership that works for them both.
