Earlier this week, it was announced that 29-year-old American actor David Corenswet would be playing Clark Kent/Superman in James Gunn’s 2025 film Superman: Legacy, the first official entry in the rebooted DCU.
In addition to Corsenswet, it was also announced that Emmy-winning The Marvelous Ms. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan had been cast as iconic reporter and Superman love interest Lois Lane. As for Corenswet, he’s previously appeared in projects such as We Own This City, Pearl, and House of Cards.
Following Corenswet’s casting, internet sleuths did some digging and found a 2019 quote that saw the actor manifesting being cast as the Man of Steel one day.
“It came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me,” Corenswet told Entertainment Weekly back in 2019 after people started noticing his resemblance to Henry Cavill.
“But my pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman. I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback [take on Superman]. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.”
Fast forward four years and Corenswet is not only taking over for Cavill but he’s doing so in a film that could be a last-chance-saloon for DC’s non-Batman-related big screen projects, as the seemingly-cursed franchise has been churning out disappointment after disappointment for so long now that audience patience is waning, as evidenced by The Flash‘s disastrous box office returns.
Now that the roles of Clark Kent and Lois Lane have been cast, Gunn will be turning his attention to finding the DCU’s Lex Luthor, with reports indicating that both Alexander Skarsgard and Bill Skarsgard are on the studio’s shortlist. Additionally, Nicholas Hoult — who was one of the three finalists for Superman — could be up for Luthor.
At this time, Superman: Legacy is set to hit movie theaters in the United States on Friday, July 11, 2025.
