David Fincher has a new movie coming out next month — Netflix’s The Killer, which stars Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton — that is clearly a return to the genre that made him one of the most acclaimed names in filmmaking.

Not counting Mank — his 2020 black-and-white passion project about Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz — the last movie that Fincher directed was 2014’s Gone Girl.

Prior to that, the now 61-year-old turned himself into a household name with films such as The Social Network, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Zodiac, Panic Room, Seven, and, of course, Fight Club.

Fight Club, in particular, is a particularly interesting artifact of Fincher’s career, as it’s not only taken on a life of its own as a cult hit, but it also seems to be a film that Fincher largely can’t stand.

In a recent interview with British GQ ahead of the release of The Killer, Fincher bluntly stated that he hasn’t seen Fight Club in 20 years and that he has no intention of doing so again.

“I haven’t seen it in 20 years. And I don’t want to,” Fincher said when GQ‘s interviewer mentioned that watched the film the night before.

“Do you have an aversion to watching your old movies?GQ asked.

“No — yes. It’s like looking at your grade school pictures, or something. ‘Yeah, I was there,’” Fincher replied.

The Killer will have a limited theatrical release beginning tomorrow, October 27, before hitting Netflix on Friday, November 10.

Here is the official synopsis for the film, via Netflix:

After a fateful near miss, an assassin battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal.

In addition to Fassbender and Swinton, Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Kerry O’Malley, Sala Baker, and Sophie Charlotte also star in the film.
