Ryan Reynolds Went To Comic-Con Dressed As Deadpool To Hang Out With Unsuspecting Fans, Costume May Tease His MCU Future

It’s been a tough year or so for Ryan Reynolds due to the baggage that’s come from his wife Blake Lively’s legal battles. At least he has something as awesome as Deadpool to fall back on.

At Fanatic Fest earlier this month, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds confirmed that there would be a new movie in the franchise following the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine and that it was currently in development.

It likely won’t be helmed by Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker Shawn Levy, however, as he was announced as the director of the Ryan Gosling-starring Ghost Rider over the weekend.

In addition to the Ghost Rider announcement, the stars of Avengers: Doomsday also took the stage to promote the highly-anticipated film. And while Reynolds may not have been on stage, he was in attendance — in the crowd, dressed as Deadpool.

As far as Avengers: Doomsday and the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe is concerned, Reynolds’ appearance at Comic-Con tells us a few things.

Here’s how Ryan Reynolds’ appearance at San Diego Comic-Con could hint at Deadpool’s MCU future

“Longtime listener, first time caller. I’m a huge fan. I’m not wearing a Doom mask over this mask because I don’t want to ruin the lines of my Canadian tuxedo,” Reynolds, in costume, said during the presentation.

First, his on-mic bit during the Doomsday presentation came when many of the film’s stars — Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal, etc. — were standing on stage to hype the film up. It would be odd to point the spotlight of that moment on a character and actor that will not feature in the film.

While Reynolds previously claimed that he hadn’t “stepped foot on set,” long-running rumors and his presence at Comic-Con would suggest otherwise.

Second, and this section will contain potential spoilers, is Deadpool’s gray suit (which is actually a denim suit, although that doesn’t always come across in photos and videos — Reynolds calls this version of the costume “Jeanpool”).

SPOILER WARNING: the following contains speculation about the plot of Avengers: Doomsday that could be considered to be SPOILERS if accurate.

The “Jeanpool” costume resembles the black-and-gray outfit from Rick Remender and Jerome Opeña’s Uncanny X-Force run, launched in October 2010 — in which Wolverine ran a black-ops kill squad that included Psylocke, Fantomex, and Deadpool, all in matching black-and-gray uniforms.

Fans have long speculated that Deadpool’s gray suit is a tease of an X-Force-focused Deadpool movie, which would also hand Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine a narrative reason to return.

The appearance also lines up with rumors that came via alleged plot leaks about a sequence early in Avengers: Doomsday that sees Deadpool and Wolverine sent to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man universe to prevent a multiversal incursion, ultimately resulting in Maguire’s Spidey’s demise.

Part of Maguire’s return as Spider-Man in 2021’s No Way Home was also featured in a sizzle reel shown during Marvel’s Hall H presentation at SDCC.
