Police in Philadelphia are on the lookout for 10 or more males suspects who are responsible for breaking into the back of a unmarked truck and stealing approximately $200,000 worth of dimes.

That’s right. The thieves had to haul away FIVE TONS of dimes – two million of them – just to make around $200K in the robbery.

The dime theft occurred in Northeast Philadelphia Thursday morning in a Walmart parking lot shortly after 6 a.m.

Philadelphia police reported that the truck contained about $750,000 in dimes in it on 15 pallets each containing $50,000 worth of dimes.

CBS News reports that the truck was traveling to the mint in Miami, Florida from the Philadelphia Mint in Old City.

The driver of the truck reportedly picked up the coins from the mint on Wednesday, then parked the trailer in the Walmart parking lot and went home to rest before heading off to Florida.

“This is common practice – to pick up a load going to Florida and go home for the night, get to sleep, and get on the road in the morning,” said Capt. Jack Ryan.

“With me, I can drop it off. That’s what I’m supposed to do. But I drop it off in the store for them in the driveway, but you’re not supposed to leave it unattended, no,” another driver claimed.

Some of the thieves were reportedly traveling in a white Chrysler 300 with tinted windows and a dark-colored pickup truck.

“They were trying to cross-load the dimes into other things. There are dimes all over the parking lot,” Capt. Ryan said.

He added, “There’s been a lot of cargo thefts here and there in Northeast Philly and South Philadelphia over the ensuing months where we’ve had lamb, chicken, TVs, refrigerators, etc. taken, alcohol.”

Speaking of people doing odd things with $200,000… a man in Oregon emptied his family’s bank account this week and tossed $200K from his car onto highway to “bless others” this week.
