‘From 300 Customers For The Day Is $246’: Man Orders Coffee At Dunkin’. Then He Sees They Charged Him A Tip Without Consent

Whether or not one should tip at a drive-thru is a debate all of us face. Yet, for one customer, Dunkin’ seemed to make that decision for him.

The man, who seems to be a separate person from the one who posted the video, recorded his conflict from his car. With a picture of the receipt on the screen, he speaks directly to the camera. As he speaks, on-screen text read, “I’m most definitely checking and asking for my receipts from now on. A tip on a drive thru purchase.”

According to him, he was told his drive-thru Dunkin’ order was $5.44. However, when he got the receipt back, he noticed that he was charged an 82-cent tip.

“I don’t care about the 82 cents, but the point is you can’t and take someone’s money without—if they didn’t give it, you can’t just automatically take it. Not on the tip, you can’t,” he says.

As he speaks, he zooms the camera on the receipt.

“I tapped my card, and I looked at the receipt, and I’m glad I asked for the receipt, but you can’t just charge or takes for a tip,” he continues. “So I’m sitting in the drive-thru and I ain’t moving.”

Then, he pans the camera to the drive-thru window, where he accuses a male staff member of “ignoring” him.

“The lady came back to the window and asked me, ‘What’s up?’ ,.. she went and told him, and they’re ignoring me now,” he explains. “And so I’m kind of p—– because how do you just take somebody’s tip?”

The Man Confronts The Employee

Then, the employee approaches the window, asking, “Yes?” In response, the man explains that he was charged a tip. When asked to put his phone down, the man refuses. “I just want what was taken,” he says.

While he initially refuses to give his receipt to the employee, he eventually does.

As he waits, he says, “I don’t understand how they just take money and not… I don’t get that s—. This s— p—– me off. And he know he did wrong. How do you just take somebody’s money? If they doing that on a daily basis with everybody, that’s crazy. That’s crazy.”

The worker then seems to hand the man a refund for the whole order. He then reiterates that while the price was $5.44 with tax, he was charged 82 cents in tips, so total bill came to $6.26.”

“You can’t just take tips,” the man insists.

In response, the worker says, “I give you a refund” and shuts the window.

“Thats fine. I’m gonna put you on facebook and let everybody know,” the man warns.

The clip has amassed 123,500 views.

While the video appears to be from a repost account, BroBible reached out to the poster by TikTok direct message. We also reached out to Dunkin’ via email.

Unacceptable

Commenters seemed to be in agreement that this was unacceptable.

“0.82 cents from 300 customers for the day is $246 times,” one wrote. “Five days is $1230.”

“File a fraud charge through your credit card company, if enough people do this, they will eventually stop,” a second said.

“They’re flat out stealing from us too now,” a third said.

“EVERYONE TRYING TO GET PAID TO DO THE JOB THEY ALREADY GETTING PAID FOR.” a fourth raged. “WILD.”

Is This Common Practice?

As BroBible previously reported, if this happens to you, many credit card companies will consider this grounds for a chargeback.

Moreover, this isn’t just a drive thru problem. It is happening in bars and restaurants, too.

In another viral video, TikToker Denise (@ugc.denise) shared how, after one meal, she put her credit card down, forgot to sign the bill, and left.

The issue arose when she returned to get her card back.

The employee told her that not only had they signed the bill on her behalf — they also added a tip.

Expressing her shock in the on-screen text, she wrote, “I’m sorry you did what?

She elaborated further in the video description. “Excuse me, you did what?” she added. “I’m not sure who trained you.. but signing the bill on behalf of the customer is wrong. And also adding tip?!”
