A woman decided to treat herself after a year of consistent working out by upgrading her gym membership. She couldn’t believe how the front desk workers treated her at the fancy new gym she tried to sign up for.
TikToker Jaci Marie Smith (@jacimariesmith) stands in her kitchen and questions what went wrong in the interaction with the two front desk workers at the unnamed gym.
“It is like solving a riddle to get a gym membership at this place,” she remarks. “Can’t figure it out online, can’t see a number to call. I’m like, ‘How do I get an actual membership?'”
She decided to go to the gym in person to try to sign up. As Smith walked in, she saw two young women at the front desk and told them she’d like to sign up for a membership.
Was She Able To Sign Up For The Fancy New Gym?
Instead of offering Smith more information on the process, the women stared at her in “dead silence.”
“I’m at a gym, right? What am I missing?” Smith questions.
The front desk workers told her that no one was available to help sign her up for a membership and started to laugh amongst themselves.
“Oh? You don’t have someone at the gym who can give me a gym membership?” Smith continues. She asked the women who she could get in touch with, and they continued to offer vague responses. Eventually, they took Smith’s number and said they’ll have another worker call her back later.
“I’m so turned off by that. I’m not going to let that stop me. But at the same timem dare I say that ruined it,” Smith says at the end of the clip.
Do Rude Workers Ruin The Gym Experience?
Smith is one of many gym-goers to take to social media to share their awkward experiences with rude front desk workers. It’s not just a high-end gym problem.
On the r/GymMotivation subreddit, one member caught a front desk worker at Planet Fitness pointing and laughing at their profile with another worker after they scanned their card. The experience made them question whether to continue their membership.
“I genuinely want to cancel my member ship now,” they write. “I was going to let this ignorant and rude employee slide, but she makes it so awkward every time I show up by never apologizing and being rude.”
Other gym membership holders discussed their experience with their gym’s staff members on r/GYM.
“One of the girls at my gym is a mean girl. She’s always giving me distasteful looks and I’m pretty sure she talks about me with some of the other staff,” one wrote. “I feel like I’m paying to get bullied lol.”
“Most arrogant assholes on the planet if they have to help you in any way aside from scanning your membership id,” another remarked about their gym experience.
What Do Viewers Think She Should Do?
While Smith shared that she still plans to sign up for the fancy gym, despite the initial interaction with the front desk workers, viewers suggested she find another gym.
“To have a bad experience at a gym while not even being a member yet says a lot about that gym,” one commenter warned.
Another said, “You are NOT weird. that would piss me off & I would find another gym.”
“So you’re not gonna join this gym right??? There’s gotta be plenty of other ones to join instead,” a third asked.
Other gym workers reacted to the behavior of the two women.
One said, “I work at a gym and when someone walks in to join I’m like oh my gosh of course let me give you a tour and talk through our membership options!! like that’s my literal job.”
“Noooo as a studio manager first impression with front desk is make or break,” a second pointed out.
@jacimariesmith Oh I’m a freak for wanting a gym membership!!! My bad!
