A flight attendant didn't hold back on a man with a 'buddy pass,' which got him a business-class seat. She shamed him for being there.
Getting upgraded to business class is a delightful surprise, especially if it’s your first time flying business class. However, one flight attendant decided to put a damper on one man’s experience.
In a TikTok with over 80,000 views, Jordy Dixson (@jordydixson) says a flight attendant was rude to him and questioned how he ended up in business class.
“’You should keep your head down because people actually pay good money for these seats.’ That’s what one of the flight attendants said to me when I got upgraded to business class,” Dixson begins.
“I felt so lucky being on standby, being like the only person who got upgraded,” he shares.
He says he was feeling happy and energetic, as this was very his first time flying business class. During the flight, Dixson says he was having issues with connecting to Wi-Fi, so he hit the call button above. After 30 minutes, no one came for support, he says, so he hit the button again. He says he thought he was being patient and simply raising his hand for help.
‘Weird To Shame Me’
Well, three hours went by, and eventually one of the flight attendants came over with some attitude, he claims. He says she questioned him on how he landed the business-class upgrade. He says he explained that he received the buddy pass through his pilot friend.
“’We know you’re not a flight attendant because you click the button,’” he recalls her saying.
Dixson says he was surprised by the confrontation and that she continued to shame Dixson.
“’People paid actually good money for these seats, like you should just keep your head down and just appreciate it. Like, we’re busy,’” he says she vented.
Dixson says he was thrown off by the interaction and didn’t understand the flight attendant’s rude attitude.
“It was weird to shame me for it like it was so bizarre,” Dixson reflects.
‘Report Her’
Viewers in the comment section believe it shouldn’t matter how you ended up in a business class. Good customer service needs to be provided no matter what.
“It’s none of her business how you got there, she has a job to do regardless and should treat all her customers with respect,” one TikTok commenter wrote.
“I was a FA and we were always told to treat our standbys the exact same if not better than other guests because they’re typically our biggest cheerleaders. She was being snarky for no reason,” another added.
“Even in economy a flight attendant is there to help you, that’s insane,” a third chimed in.
Other commenters revealed most people use points for business class seats.
“‘People paid good money for these seats’ Nah, it’s either points, they’ve used an upgrade voucher, or their employer paid. Very rare for someone to pay full price for business,” one commented.
“Why are they acting like it’s coming out of their paycheck? I find it so odd when people act this way about their multimillion dollar business,” one questioned.
More viewers encouraged him to report her for her poor service.
“Oh, report her. Report. Her,” one wrote.
“I would submit a formal complaint and get them all dismissed,” another said.
“That’s insane behavior omg,” a third wrote.
What’s A Buddy Pass?
Most airlines will offer the opportunity for employees a buddy pass as a way to fill up unused seats on flights, Islands reports. This pass can be used by the employees themselves or the employee’s friends and family. The flights are either offered at a significant discount or free of charge. While the seat isn’t guaranteed—its essentially standby—having a buddy pass can be a great way to land a good deal if space allows.
PassRider shares buddy passes are best for last-minute trips and if your travel plans are flexible. For example, it’s best to skip out on a buddy pass if the flight is for a wedding or holiday.
The “buddy” will tentatively book the flight, head to the airport, and will have to wait and see if the flight has an opening for them.
These passes are considered non-revenue standby tickets, which will not guarantee the buddy will get on the flight. Because of this, flexibility is required, as you may not get the first choice flight.
When doing a buddy pass, it’s smart to have a back-up in case the initial flight doesn’t work out. One thing to remember is that buddy passes are only valid for the one specific airline that it was assigned to. Also, some passes may require passengers to pay fees for taxes, service charges, or international charges.
On the bright side, there’s a decent chance you’ll be placed to fly first or business class with a buddy pass. Extra tips include packing light and dressing nicely.
