Ford Has Filed A Patent For An Autonomous Police Car That Will Pull You Over

Ford has filed for a patent for an autonomous police car that could one day replace patrol officers. The patent, which was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in January, calls for a self-driving police cruiser that would be able to detect infractions by motorists and then track them down to issue a ticket.

According to the patent the autonomous police car “may involve a processor associated with an autonomous vehicle obtaining an indication of violation of one or more traffic laws by a first vehicle.” The processor would potentially utilize sensors, cameras, navigation, AI, GPS, and possibly even orders given by a remote user. The robot police cruiser would pull you over and issue you a citation without asking you, “Do you know why I pulled you over?” There won’t even be an opportunity to talk your way out of a ticket by using the excuse of overactive bowels.

The autonomous police vehicle would wirelessly connect to the car in question, communicate with the passenger, verify identity, and issue a ticket. It may not even need to pull you over to give you a ticket. “The method may further involve the processor executing one or more actions with respect to the first vehicle,” the patent states. Welcome to our dystopian future, let’s hope that the robocop cars do not become self-aware and that they accept PBA cards.
